It’s because of the Miller cycle.

Presented a year ago, the U11 generation BMW X1 SUV received a “warmed up” version of the M35i. And it seems that this is the first time in the history of the brand when the M-modification is the third most powerful: the 2.0-liter B48 turbo four develops only 300 hp. With. and 400 Nm – 6 forces and 50 Newtons less than other BMW 35s with the same engine.

The Germans say that they switched to the Miller cycle, at the same time making adjustments to the design of the intake manifold, combustion chambers and exhaust system, and also changed the crankshaft to a more durable one and finalized the lubrication system. The liners and bearing caps are the same as on the B58 inline six. The engine works in conjunction with a 7-speed preselective “robot” (and not with an “automatic”, like other M35i) and an xDrive all-wheel drive system with a rear axle clutch.

By the way, the American versions will be somewhat more powerful: 317 forces. However, this is only the second indicator among all modifications of the X-First: the iX1 electric car produces 230 kW (313 hp) and 494 Nm, and the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid produces 240 kW (326 hp) and 477 Newtons. But the M35i is devoid of any hybrid “add-ons” and therefore lighter: the curb weight is 1665 kg compared to 1860 kg for a hybrid and 2010 kg for an electric car. In dynamics, too, the superiority of the gasoline version, even if the indicators are not impressive: 5.4 s to “hundreds” and 250 km / h of maximum speed. And there is also a “full-fledged” 540-liter trunk, because there is no battery in the back.

Other features of the X1 M35i are adaptive suspension with 15mm lowering (189mm ground clearance), a mechanical front differential lock and a braking system with 385mm discs and four-piston calipers at the front and 330mm at the rear. BMW says the new brakes not only provide more effective deceleration, but also reduce unsprung weight.

The easiest way to distinguish the M version is by its aggressive body kit: 19-inch wheels are standard (20-inch wheels are available for an extra charge), four 80-mm exhaust pipes protrude from the rear bumper, “nostrils” with a different lamella design, black mirror housings and a developed rear wing, and the ventilation slots in the bumpers and diffusers have become larger.
The bucket seats are trimmed in a combination of faux leather and Alcantara by default, but genuine Vernasca leather with diamond stitching is offered as an interior trim option. Other comfort attributes include a panoramic roof, a Harman Kardon audio system and ambient lighting.

A bunch of two displays on the front panel differs not only in special graphics, but also in the ninth version of the proprietary operating system. The Germans say that using online services will become even more convenient, and over-the-air update cycles will become shorter.
The version for the American market is not just made more powerful. First – in October – the new X1 M35i will appear at US dealers, and sales in Europe will begin a month later. This is despite the fact that M-crossovers will be assembled at the same plant in Regensburg, where all other X1s are produced.
