Used Toyota Land Cruiser 300s already cost twice as much as new ones in Japan

The median price of a used Land Cruiser ZX (this is the index that “300” in the domestic market has) for the 2022 model year reached $129,000 (17.05 million yen), Nikkei Asia reports, citing Proto Corp. classification data.
Since its debut last year, the new Land Cruiser has seen a surge in demand. So much so that the queues for the car stretched out for four years, and Toyota decided to stop accepting orders (the decision also affected the platform Lexus LX, where the situation with the queues is similar).
Fulfillment of the production plan is complicated by the ongoing shortage of chips, which regularly forces the Japanese to stop the assembly line.
According to the publication, buyers are willing to overpay for an SUV with low mileage, so as not to wait for the new Land Cruiser for several years. And pay a lot. The price list for the new Land Cruiser ZX starts at 5.1 million yen (38.4 thousand dollars), and the most expensive equipment is estimated at 8 million yen (60 thousand dollars).
A similar situation (when they ask for more RRP for a used car) arose with Alphard: the median price for used minivans in 2021 c. in the configuration of the Executive Lounge S with a hybrid power plant rose to 8.25 million yen (62.1 thousand dollars), while for the new Alphard with this equipment, Toyota asks for 7.75 million yen (58.4 thousand dollars) .

Used Harriers, Corolla Cross and the compact Suzuki Jimny SUV are also slightly more expensive than new ones.
Japanese auto dealers attribute the rise in prices, among other things, to the influx of buyers from abroad, especially from developing countries. Some used car dealerships prefer to sell cars through auctions. “Attorneys of wealthy buyers from emerging economies pay [на таких аукционах. – Д.] large sums, ”one of the sellers told the publication.

Toyota Land Cruiser 300 has been on sale in Russia since July last year, but it was unrealistic to buy an SUV from us for the recommended 5.6-7.6 million rubles.
