At the Shanghai Motor Show, owned by Volvo (which, in turn, goes under the structure of Geely Auto), electric brand Polestar presented the fourth production model with the corresponding numerical index. And no, the photo shows not just a coupe-like version of the Polestar 3, but a completely new car, albeit not devoid of structural similarities with the “troika”.
Polestar 4 is designed to close the price gap between the electric crossovers of the second (from 48.4 thousand dollars) and the third model (from 83.9 thousand dollars): with a starting price of 60 thousand dollars, the “four” will compete with the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. Why with them?
The fact is that the new Polestar is not exactly a crossover. It is slightly longer (4839mm), wider (2139mm including mirrors) and taller (1544mm) than the models listed, while maintaining the same axle spacing as the Polestar 3 (2999mm). The “four” is built on the same SEA1 platform with a double-lever suspension in front and a “multi-link” in the rear. Spring shock absorbers are standardly installed, but air struts will also be available for an extra charge. The brake system (four-piston calipers on the front axle, single-piston on the rear) is supplied by Brembo. Wheels are available in 20″ and 22″ diameters.
The main feature of the novelty is the complete absence of a rear window. The extravagant engineering solution was first used on the Polestar Precept concept (from which the Polestar 4 has separate headlights) and has quite practical reasons: the rear power roof cross member is shifted forward, which solves the problem of lack of headroom for rear passengers. And the trunk swings open almost like a station wagon and has a solid opening.
Polestar 3 (left) is taller, longer and narrower than the cross-coupe, but they have the same axle spacing
At the same time, the interior mirror is full-fledged, but it normally works in display mode, which broadcasts a picture from a wide-angle rear view camera. The display can be turned off to monitor what is happening on the second row. There is a separate touch screen for controlling the air conditioning system and an angle-adjustable back of the sofa. Due to the rejection of the rear window, the panoramic roof (electrochromic glass with several degrees of transparency will be offered for an extra charge) was stretched to the rear pillar.
The Polestar 4 will debut in two versions (single and twin motor) with a single 102kWh lithium-ion battery. The initial version will have a rear electric motor delivering 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm, while the peak output of the twin motor version will be 400 kW (584 hp) and 686 Nm. The most powerful modification will be able to accelerate to “hundreds” in 3.8 seconds – a record among Polestar models, but the i4 M50 and especially the Model 3 Performance are even faster. The power reserve is 600 and 560 km, respectively, in the WLTP cycle (the powerful version turns off the front motor to save charge). The maximum power of the charging current is 200 kW.
The interior is made in the spirit of other Polestars, but the diagonal of the central display is even larger than that of the Polestar 3 – 15.4 inches. It is “wired” with climate control and a set of Google services, including a voice assistant. The dashboard screen is small (10.2 inches), because the main indicators are duplicated on a 14.7-inch projection display. There is a mode with yellow indicators instead of white ones, so that it is more comfortable to read the indicators against the background of snow: the Swedes!
The seats are available in wool, faux nappa leather and signature MicroTech fabric. As an option, it will be possible to choose a Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers, but when ordering leather trim, their number will increase to 16: additional speakers will be located in the headrests of the seats (and the seats themselves will receive massage and ventilation functions).
Already at the start of sales, a second-level autopilot will be available (the essence of adaptive cruise control with lane keeping function): Polestar 4 is equipped with twelve external ultrasonic sensors, a dozen cameras (one of them monitors the driver, but against the backdrop of the recent scandal with Tesla, the Swedes clarify that she cannot save the captured files) and a long-range radar. The model can have up to nine airbags.
Unlike the Troika, the Polestar 4 will only be assembled in China, at the Geely plant in the Ningbo industrial area. The model will appear on the local market in November this year. At the beginning of 2024, deliveries to the countries of Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific Region will begin.
