Mercedes-Benz has shown the first official images of the new W214 generation E-Class, which will go on sale this summer. By tradition, the interior was declassified first.
For the hydrocarbon model, the Germans took pity on the MBUX Hyperscreen digital panel with three displays under one glass.
Instead, the expensive trims of the new E-Class will be equipped with the MBUX Superscreen system, which is a cross between the Hyperscreen and S-Class split screens: there is a separate dashboard display (under it is the engine start button) and two touch-screen multimedia screens – central and for front passenger (the Germans do not specify their diagonal, but the central display is definitely smaller than that of electric vehicles).
The basic versions, judging by the spy photos, will differ in the absence of a third display, but the central touchscreen will be similar in size and capabilities.
All displays are controlled by one powerful processor. In general, the interior of the new E-Class will be similar to the decoration of the EQE electric liftback, but instead of nifty air vents, the designers settled on narrow slits in the style of the flagship sedan. The direction of the air ducts can still be adjusted with levers, but in certain modes, the optional Thermotronic air conditioning system does everything itself.
The main bet is made on the possibility of new multimedia. A camera is installed on the front panel: with its help you can take photos and videos, as well as communicate via video calls, including through the pre-installed Zoom application. The E-Class wants to stop being a white-collar machine and is already currying favor with zoomers and millennials: TikTok video hosting and the Angry Birds video game are also listed among the built-in applications, and the icons in the main menu will become more smartphone-like. In some countries – probably North America – 5G connectivity will be available.
For a surcharge, a Burmester 4D audio system with 17 speakers and Dolby Atmos surround sound technology will be available. Optional atmospheric lighting will “play along” with the music or movie using color animation. Mercedes is also completing work on an advanced voice assistant (the phrase “Hey, Mercedes” to address the car can be omitted) and the function of linking several parameters (heated seats, atmospheric lighting, airflow temperature) to certain “scenarios”: for example, in the heat of the car it will automatically turn on the air conditioner, seat ventilation and activate the backlight of a predetermined color. Another technology that will debut with the new E-Class is aimed at combating motion sickness. It will only be available as part of the optional Energizing Comfort system.
The premiere of the new E-Class W214 will take place in the spring, and the cars will appear at European dealers in the summer of 2023. Together with the sedan, the station wagon will also debut. Sales in the US will begin in the fall.
