Sometimes “accelerating 48-volt starter-alternator” is just a figure of speech.

Two weeks ago, BMW showed the updated X5 and X6 crossovers, and now it’s time to update the “charged” M-modifications. Outwardly, they are easiest to recognize by the new headlights, the modules of which have become 35 mm thinner (the X5 M Competition has also changed the filling of the rear lights), and by the horizontal black grille slats.

Following simpler modifications, the emki also received a 48-volt starter-generator, which develops 9 kW (14 hp) and 200 Nm. At the same time, the engineers upgraded the turbochargers and intake manifold, strengthened the crankshaft (this is a consequence of installing a starter-generator) and optimized the lubrication system. However, this did not affect the peak output (and even the width of the torque shelf): restyled crossovers produce the same 625 hp. With. and 750 Nm.

The manipulations also affected the 8-speed “automatic”, which in the “combat” mode now shifts gears a little harder. It would seem that so many innovations will definitely make the car faster …
No matter how. Due to the electronic “add-on weight”, as well as regular 22-inch wheels on the rear axle (pre-styling cars were equipped with R21 wheels), the curb weight added 65 kg: the X5 M Competition weighs 2400 kg, and a similar cross-coupe weighs 2370 kg. As a result, the acceleration rate to the first “hundred” increased by one tenth of a second (up to 3.9 s), and to the second – by four tenths (up to 13.8 s for the X5; up to 13.4 s for the X6). As before, the top speed is limited to 250 km/h, but for 2,450 euros you can buy the M Driver’s package, which pushes the collar up to 290 km/h.

Salon updated in corporate style. A 14.9-inch touchscreen of the multimedia system is located in front of the driver, where, for the sake of economy, the climate control was “sewn up”: there are much fewer hardware keys on the front panel. The central locking can be unlocked and the engine can be started via the BMW Digital Key Plus app. The 12.3-inch instrument panel has redrawn speedometer and tachometer scales.

Other innovations include carbon-fiber paddles and a decorative insert on the front panel with an illuminated “M” letter. Also, electronic assistants now better recognize pedestrians and cyclists, and the marking control system will be able to independently return the car to its lane. Finally, the My BMW app for iPhones will have a valet with a range of 200 meters.

“Charged” crossovers have become not only slower, but also more expensive. The X5 M Competition is available for order for 158.3 thousand euros without options (+9.2 thousand euros), while the updated X6 M Competition will cost at least 161.2 thousand euros (+9.1 thousand euros).
