Major automakers are gradually mastering the segment of electric sedans, and now the turn has come to Hyundai: the appearance of the Ioniq 6 has been declassified, the official premiere of which will take place in July.

The premiere of the Ioniq 6 can be considered the answer of the Koreans to the Volkswagen concern, which at the beginning of this week showed its first ID.Aero electric sedan. The Germans also boasted of a low drag coefficient: the Volkswagen has 0.23. However, Hyundai’s argument turned out to be even more convincing, because the Ioniq sedan has the notorious Cd of 0.21. Of the production cars, only the Mercedes-Benz EQS is more streamlined with its unprecedented Cd = 0.2, but the latter already belongs to the liftback class.
However, the Ioniq 6 also looks like a liftback: the C-pillar ends far behind the wheel arch, which is why the trunk lid is located diagonally in profile. The legendary Belgian Luc Donckerwolke (Audi A2, Lamborghini Diablo/Gallardo/Murcielago, the first Skoda Fabia and Octavia, etc.) was responsible for the appearance of the car, who returned to Hyundai in 2020 after a short pause.
In April of the same year, the Prophecy concept was introduced, which determined the final appearance of the production car. On the way to it, the model acquired new bumpers and became noticeably taller – the concept looked more like a four-door coupe in the spirit of the Porsche Taycan. However, all extravagant exterior solutions will reach the mass public almost in their original form.
The car is built on the super-successful E-GMP platform that auto journalists love. It’s no joke, two of the three models-medalists of the Car of the Year 2022 competition, the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, are built on it. However, outwardly, the sedan has little in common with the platform electric crossover, except perhaps a plentiful scattering of LED pixels as part of optical modules. By the way, there are more than 700 of them throughout the body. The Koreans compare their electric cars with chess pieces and declare their intention to make each model outwardly unique.

Record-breaking aerodynamics are provided, among other things, by electromechanical flaps in the front bumper, and at the back of the Ioniq 6 there are two “duck tail” winglets at once. The company reports that the bottom of the electric car is completely flat (the rear diffuser is responsible for the distribution of air flows), and the reduced gaps in the wheel arches have further improved the aerodynamics of the sedan.
By the way, not in all markets Ioniq 6 will be so streamlined: the legislation of a number of countries does not allow the sale of cars with cameras instead of exterior rear-view mirrors, so for example, in the US, a sedan will be sold with traditional mirrors.

But the interior of the sedan does not differ so much from the crossover: the same panel of two 12-inch dashboard displays and a multimedia system is located in front of the driver. For the sake of interior space, engineers revised the design of door cards, as a result of which all buttons, including power windows, disappeared from there. Atmospheric LED lighting will offer riders a range of 64 colors as well as six two-tone combinations.

The full premiere of the sedan will take place in July. So far, only the technical specifications remain a secret, but there is every reason to believe that the Ioniq 6 will share the power plant with other platform models.
